About us

We are family-scl.com, and we have been making furniture for children for many years now — long enough to have watched the first children who grew up with our step stools become old enough to help in the kitchen on their own.

It began with a small problem and a big feeling. A child standing on tiptoes at the kitchen counter, desperate to see what was happening up there. A parent who wanted to say yes, but wanted it to be safe. We looked for something sturdy, beautiful and honest, and when we could not find it, we made it ourselves — one tower, in a small workshop, for one very determined little helper.

Then a neighbour asked for one. Then a friend of a neighbour. And somewhere between the sawdust and the late evenings, it quietly stopped being a favour and became our work.

What the years taught us

Time is a hard teacher, and a fair one. Years of making the same pieces over and over showed us exactly which corner a child leans on, which joint takes the weight, which edge needs one more pass of the sanding block. We learned that children do not use furniture gently, and that they should not have to. So we build for the way children actually live: climbed on, jumped off, drawn on, dragged across the floor and loved a little too hard.

We work with Baltic birch plywood, sand every edge smooth by hand, and finish each piece with child-safe materials. Not because it is faster — it is not — but because the furniture in a child's room should be the very last thing a parent has to worry about.

Four words we build by

Family, Support, Care and Love. They are on our learning towers, but more importantly they are the questions we ask before anything leaves the workshop: would we put this in our own child's room? Would we hand it down to someone we love? If the answer is not an easy yes, it goes back on the bench.

Made to be handed down

Children change faster than furniture should. That is why so much of what we make is adjustable, convertible, or simply built strong enough to outlast childhood itself — passed from an older sibling to a younger one, from one family to the next, from a first home to somebody's attic and back down again. We would far rather sell you one thing that lasts ten years than ten things that last one.

Some of the loveliest messages we receive are photographs of a tower we made years ago, still standing in a kitchen, with a completely different child on it.

Where we are today

We are still the same people, with rather more space. From our own warehouse we now supply families, retailers, distributors and online shops across Europe and around the world, and we run our own dropship system that connects a partner's store directly to our stock and fulfils their orders automatically — so a partner can sell our furniture without ever holding a box. If you have bought one of our pieces from another shop, there is a good chance it left our warehouse and travelled straight to your door.

If you would like to sell our furniture, we would love to meet you: have a look at Become a Partner or our Wholesale Program.

Say hello

We are a small team and we still read every message ourselves. A question about a product, an order, assembly, or simply which tower suits a three-year-old — write to support@family-scl.com and a real person will answer, usually within one business day.

Thank you for being here. Give the little one a wave from us.
