Helping Children Overcome Anxiety: Tips for Parents

    Anxiety is a normal and common emotion, but when it becomes overwhelming it can interfere with daily life. As a parent, it's natural to want to protect your child from things that make them anxious. However, this can actually make anxiety worse in the long run. The best way to help your child overcome anxiety is to teach them to manage it as it arises. With practice, they will become more comfortable with anxious feelings and be better equipped to cope with them.

    One way to do this is to show empathy without agreeing with your child's fears. For example, you might say: "I know you're worried about going to the doctor. It's okay to feel anxious. You can get through this and I'll be here to support you." Avoid leading questions like "Are you scared about the test tomorrow?" and instead ask open-ended questions like "How do you feel about the test tomorrow?" Your calm demeanor and body language can also help your child stay calm. 

    Another helpful tip is to keep your child distracted before an event that may trigger anxious feelings, such as a doctor's appointment. It can also be helpful to discuss a plan with your child in case their worst fears come true. What would they do? Who would they ask for help? Having a plan can help alleviate anxiety.
    Finally, remember that it's okay for parents to feel anxious too. By modeling healthy ways of coping with anxiety, you can help your child understand that it's a normal emotion and doesn't have to be a big deal. With time and practice, your child will be better able to
